Earl Umberger Obituary

Roanoke Rapids -

On December 13th our wonderful father and loving husband, Earl Dean Umberger, age 86, closed his eyes and breathed his last breath here on earth, opened his eyes to see Jesus, and began breathing the air of heaven.

He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Stout Umberger residing in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. His family legacy is that he is survived by his three children, Randy Dean Umberger of Apex, North Carolina, Robin Umberger Taylor of Nashville, North Carolina, and Dawn Umberger Mitchell of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, along with their spouses, Denise Umberger, Charles Taylor and Darel Mitchell.

Earl is also survived also by seven grandchildren, Anna Dudley, Britten Berry, Joshua Taylor, Rebekah Umberger, Caitlin Thye, Rachel Peles, and Chelsea Strachan; nine great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Earl was the youngest of 12 children born to Vinnie and Samuel Umberger in Ceres, Virginia. Later the family settled in Germantown, Maryland. As a young man Earl joined the 82nd Airborne Division of the army as a paratrooper. Upon leaving the army he met and married JoAnn Stout in Jacksonville, Florida. He became Meat Market Manager of Pantry Pride Foods and later became the Director of Meat Operations for Wetterau Foods in Charleston, South Carolina. The Umbergers moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1977 where Earl was the Director of Meat Operations for Thomas & Howard Foods. Upon retirement, Earl and JoAnn returned to Baldwin, Florida where he worked part time as a security guard for a care facility in Jacksonville, Florida.

Earl’s favourite thing to do was to play golf! He loved the game and the time it allowed him to enjoy the outdoors, and the company of his son and sons in love. He enjoyed watching football and being with his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed! But this is not goodbye but see you later!
