Obituary

Billy Bridgers, a faithful servant of God, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.

A devoted Christian man, Billy dedicated his life to serving others, spreading the Word of God, and showing kindness to everyone he met. He was a longtime member of Gideons International and the Kiwanis International, where he faithfully served his community and participated in mission work around the world. Through his work with the Gideons, he traveled overseas sharing the Gospel, Bibles, and hope with others. He was known for returning home with little more than the clothes on his back because he had given away everything else to those in need. His giving spirit was simply who he was.

Billy was also well known throughout the community for his dedication to the Kiwanis Club, where he faithfully volunteered his time serving others and supporting community causes. He was especially known for his incredible ability to sell peanuts during fundraisers, always helping bring people together for a good cause. He never met a stranger and loved sharing sweets, Bibles, stories, and laughter with everyone he encountered.

He spent his life working in upholstery and proudly owned and operated Bridgers Upholstery for many years. Billy also started the Upholstery Program at Edgecombe Community College over 22 years ago, where he loved teaching others his trade. He took pride in hard work, providing for his family, and serving others with grace and generosity.

Billy loved the simple joys in life: a hot cup of coffee no matter the season, sweets and ice cream, time spent with family, and opportunities to help those around him. Above all, he deeply loved his family and cherished his late wife, Ruth Bridgers, who preceded him in death in 2021

He is survived by his children, Rickie Bridgers (Mollie) of Tarboro and Billy Ray Bridgers (Pam) of Tarboro; grandchildren, Kristen Bridgers and Emma Neer (Logan); and great-grandson, Leo Bridgers. He is also survived by his siblings, Betty Lou Proenneke (Charles), Deborah Norris (Scrap), Ruth Turner, David Bridgers (Beverly), Rita Freeman (Ricky), and Naomi Burgess (Bruce).

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Bridgers; parents, Benjamin and Emma Bridgers; and siblings, Benjamin Bridgers, Rosa Dunn, Joseph Bridgers, Mary Casper, and Ray Bridgers.

Billy’s life was a testimony of faith, generosity, humility, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God, family, and community that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

We will celebrate Billy's life and legacy at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Sunset Church of God, 1709 Anaconda Road, Tarboro, NC 27886. The family will greet friends prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 pm.
