Brent Whitley

Gary Brent Whitley, 73, passed away on September 10, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a family who loved him beyond measure.

Brent was born on August 29, 1953, in Nash County, North Carolina, to the late Omus and Dorothy Whitley. He grew up on a farm in Spring Hope, and those country roots remained a part of who he was throughout his life.

Brent later moved to Wilson, where life brought him one of his greatest blessings—his wife, Jane. Brent and Jane returned to Spring Hope, where they made their home and raised their four daughters. Family was always at the center of Brent’s life, and the home and life they built together became the foundation for generations of memories.

Brent spent many years as an independent over-the-road truck driver. Out on the road, he was known by his CB handle, “Sidekick.” He was a hardworking man who wasn’t afraid of a long day’s work, but he also knew how to appreciate the simple things in life.

He loved cooking and feeding his family, horseback riding and buggy riding, enjoyed cutting grass, working in his garden and taking care of his yard. He was happiest outdoors, doing the things he loved and enjoying the home and land that meant so much to him.

But nothing compared to Brent’s love for his family.

He loved his daughters dearly, and becoming a grandfather and great-grandfather brought him a special kind of happiness. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were truly the light of his life. There was nothing he enjoyed more than having his family around him, watching the younger generations grow and simply spending time with the people he loved.

Brent leaves behind his loving wife of fifty-one years, Jane Whitley; their four daughters, Stephanie (Lee) Owens, Gretchen, Brendell (Jason) Robinson, and Amber (Ronnie) Nichols; and his siblings, Sonya (Wayne) Stone, Charlotte (Z.T.) Sherron, and Amelia (Charles) Phillips.

He was an adoring "Pa" to his beloved grandchildren, Addison, Bailee, Trey (Alexis), Mandy, Chelsey (Chad), Nick, Taylor, Alanna, Ronnie Jr, "Miniman", Anna and Andrew; and precious great-grandchildren, Damien, Brentley, Serenity, Quinn, Nash, Beau, Wade and Chassidy.

Brent was preceded in death by his siblings, Harold, Randall, Cray, Stewart, and Hilda; his grandson, Matthew and granddaughter, Cassidy "NeNe".

Brent’s passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, but the life he lived leaves behind so much more—a loving wife, four daughters who will forever carry a piece of their daddy with them, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who knew how deeply they were loved, and countless memories that death can never take away.

Those who knew Brent will remember the hardworking truck driver called “Sidekick,” the country man who loved horses, his garden and his yard, and the husband, daddy, brother, and "Pa" whose greatest treasure was his family.

His journey on this earth may have ended, but the love he gave his family will continue through every generation that follows. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

“A man never truly leaves us when the love he gave remains in the hearts of those he left behind.”

A service to celebrate Brent's life and pay tribute to his memory will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at MidPoint Church of God, 5407 S NC 231, Middlesex, NC 27557.
