Obituary

Rocky Mount -

Charles Michael Hinton, age 67, passed away early Sunday morning, March 17, 2024 with his loving family by his side. Mike was born in Nash County on April 24, 1956 to Charles "Speight" and Faye McMichael Hinton on April 24, 1956. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Juliette C. Howard.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Peggy Hinton; daughter, Dawn B. Lee (Jason) and son, Phillip W. Briley Jr. (Kristy); brother, Norman Bruce Hinton; special aunt, Florence Horton; and devoted sisters-in-law and caregivers, Janette Moody, Kimberly LaPointe (Chrissy and Kenny Ferebee) and Brenda J. Howard.  Mike was an adoring "Pap Pap" to his grandchildren, Tyde Lee, Annabeth, Everleigh and Phillip Briley III. They were considered the apples of his eye and enjoyed the sweet nicknames he gave them: "Booger", "Sugar", "Snoggle Knot", and "Junior" Mike was a devoted husband and father, affectionately known by his children as "Pappy."  He lived by example with strong work ethics, hard work and character that was honest, fair, and worthy of respect. He served as a firefighter for the West Edgecombe Fire Department in the early 1970's and later with the City of Rocky Mount Fire Department from 1974-1978. While firetrucks held their own level of excitement, Mike's passion was deeply rooted within the parts and bearings of the tractor world. Honing his knowledge of tractors and their many components from the time he was a boy, he became known for locating "hard to find" tractor parts, diligently searching to locate needed items for his customers. As the Parts Manager for Premier Equipment Company, Mike took his job seriously by delivering exceptional service and was well respected and often sought for his knowledge of various tractor parts. Although he enjoyed part searching for many different tractors, he was a Ford enthusiast above all others.

Mike also enjoyed the exciting action of WWF Wrestling and the high speeds and thrills of NASCAR, always pulling for his favorite, #9 Bill Elliott. He enjoyed working alongside Peggy as together they owned and operated a wonderful specialty catering service, "Top of the Pines Catering," for twenty-five years.

Family was everything to Mike...his life was filled with a deep love for those that made his circle complete and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, 11:00 am, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church Cemetery, 3204 Western Blvd., Tarboro, North Carolina.
