Cindy Dawson

Cynthia "Cindy" Miller Dawson, age 73, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, September 20, 2026 with her devoted husband by her side. She was born in Wilson County on November 29, 1953 to Claude Earl Miller and Esther Ann Brantley Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Tracy Edwards.

Cindy graduated from Atlantic Christian College in May, 1976 with a degree in elementary education. In September that same year, she embarked on a rewarding career with Red Oak Elementary School that spanned uninterrupted for thirty years. She understood the importance of elementary education and was passionate about teaching children to love learning. Her skills, patience, and compassion led the way in her efforts to make a difference in the lives of her young students. And for thirty years, she taught them, molded them, loved them and nurtured them in so many ways, as so many wonderful educators do. Cindy retired from her beloved Red Oak Elementary at the end of the school year in May, 2006. Our community has been blessed by her contributions and steadfast commitment to the early foundations of countless first graders fortunate to be a part of Mrs. Dawson's life.

Cindy was a very active and proud member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a sorority of educators. The sorority was a significant part of her life as well as her sorority sisters

Cindy is survived by her loving husband of forty-four years, Eric L. Dawson, III; sister, Jennie Miller Edwards; brother-in-law, John Michael Dawson (June), all of Rocky Mount; nephews, John M. Dawson, Jr (Morgan) of Rocky Mount, Luke Edwards (Brianna) of Nashville and and Austin Edwards of Rocky Mount; great-nephews, Tracy Edwards, Syler Dawson, Hayden Dawson and Brody Dawson; along with many family friends and other extended relatives.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at the Red Oak Elementary School Gymnasium, 5603 Red Oak Road, Red Oak, NC 27809. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
