Joyce Britt, lovingly known as “Gloria” by close friends and family, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at the age of 75, following a recurring battle with cancer. Her life began in Johnston County, NC on May 1, 1950, the sixth of nine children born to Seth Earl and Mary Price Toole.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of twenty-seven years, James Earl Britt; her 21 year old faithful and fearlessly protective rat terrier, Brownie; siblings, Bonnie Lou Toole Norris, Charles Earl Toole, Helen Evans, Linwood Toole, Arthur Toole, S.E. Toole, Jr., Sue Moye and Wayne Toole; and mother-in-law who she loved dearly, Minnie Britt Braddy.

Joyce was a familiar face for many years during her employment with Thorne Drug where she enjoyed her work helping customers. She also enjoyed worshipping as a member of Tarboro Church of Christ and appreciated the many friendships that grew from there. She proved herself to be a fighter as she navigated a healthcare journey of ups and downs, from one diagnosis to another, cancer treatments, medications, and remissions. She faced her illnesses with bravery and dignity, showing us the depth of her courage and strength. She will be deeply missed by those of us who loved her. 

Joyce is survived by her children, Tony Britt (Tina), Paula Britt Klutz, all of Tarboro and Thomas Britt (Jessica) of Bethel; grandchildren, L.J. Klutz (Hope), Logan Klutz Faith Anderson (Christopher), Ava Leonard and Breanna Little; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Janie Britt; special friend, Catherine Batchelor; along with many nieces, nephews, family friends, and other extended relatives.

A service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Lakecrest Mausoleum, Edgecombe Memorial Park, Hwy 258, Tarboro, NC 27886. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. 

Because a mother's love doesn't end with death, Joyce would be honored with memorial contributions for Thomas as he battles many challenges of his own terminal diagnosis. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please direct donations to Jessica Britt, 3900 Whitehurst Street, Bethel, NC  27812.
