Rocky Mount -

Leona May Stewart passed away peacefully at home January 12, 2022, at the age of 92. She was born Leona May Curtis on June 12, 1929, daughter of Roy Curtis Sr., and Mary B Curtis of Belfast Maine. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dale W. Stewart; daughter, Patricia Suitor; sisters, Irene Scholes and Harriet Barker; brother, Roy Curtis Jr.; and granddaughter, Michelle Anderson.

She is survived by her children, Ray Hills and wife, Debbie of Orono, ME, Richard Hills of Houlton, ME and Lizz Suitter and husband, Jerry of Rocky Mount; beloved step-daughters, Sherry Talmadge and husband, Bob of Greenwich, NY, Cindy Laprise and husband, Paul of Saco, ME, Nancy Gizinski and husband, Joe of Lewiston, ME, Susan Basso and husband, Curt of Gold Canyon, AZ and Wanda Grass and husband, Dana of N. Yarmouth, ME; grandchildren, Jennifer Orchard of Stonington, ME, Tammi McLaughlin of Paris, TX, Tennille Scott of Houlton, ME, Christine Hills of Sault Ste Marie, MI, Ryan Hills of Orono, ME, Mark Oliver of Mableton, GA, Rob Talmadge of Concord, NH, Scott Talmadge of Argyle, NY, Eric Talmadge of Greenwich,  NY and Peter Quigley of Columbia, SC; along with many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; special friends, Dee, Yvonne, Mary Helen, and her beloved cat, Barney.

Leona lived in Winterport, Maine for 15 years where she raised her family.  She loved to cook, sew and paint.  She attended the Winterport Methodist Church, taught Sunday School and belonged to the Women's Group.  In the 1970's she moved to Houlton, Maine and she put her cooking talents to work at the FW Woolworth store and an area nursing home.  After retirement, she moved to Rocky Mount, NC with her daughter, Lizz and son in law, Jerry, and they shared many adventures together.  She was baptized into membership at  Christ Covenant Church where she attended.  Her love and concern for her children was with her until the end of her life.  She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
