Obituary

Jacksonville -

Becky Bennett was born Rebecca Tankersley on September 30, 1938 in Gainesville, GA. She graduated from Truett-McConnell College with an Associate Degree, June 1958. She married the love of her life, Alva R. Bennett, August 1958 in Gainesville, GA. She and Al lived in Georgia and Florida for eleven years. Her three sons, Royce, Ray, and Danny, were born in Miami, FL. In August of 1969, they moved to Rocky Mount, NC. She and Al raised their sons and lived in Rocky Mount until 2018 when they moved to Jacksonville, NC. Becky passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 30, 2025.

While in Rocky Mount, Becky and Al started the Shepherd Shoppe. She was the primary manager and day to day director for the store until she retired in 2008. When the store was closed by a major flood in November 1999, she and Al worked tirelessly to reopen the store within six months. She loved helping people strengthen their relationship with Christ through books and music.

Becky accepted Christ as her Savior as a young child and dedicated her life to service and surrender to her Savior as a young adult. She faithfully grew in her Christian walk throughout her life. Her love of God was evident in the love and compassion she showed for all people. She faithfully served God in her Christian bookstore ministry and in numerous churches through the years. She taught children for many years in Englewood Assembly of God, Rocky Mount, NC, and in Blue Creek Baptist Church, Jacksonville, NC.

After her love of God and Al, her greatest love was for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved holding Jonathan and Brandon, her grandsons. She was especially thrilled to pour her heart into her granddaughters, Michelle, Courtney, Elizabeth and Kelly, because she finally had girls to raise. Being able to love her great-grandkids brought her great joy and contentment. Her face lit up with joy whenever she got to spend time with Cody, Noa, Gideon, and Eli, Newt, Boyd, and Jude, Paisley, and Abigail.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Al Bennett; sons, Royce Bennett (Karen), Ray Bennett (Debbie) and Danny Bennett (Kim); sister, Linda Gardner; brothers-in-law, Tom Bennett (Connie) and Paul Bennett (Vickie) and sister-in-law, Loma Sue Chesney; along with other extended family and friends. Becky was a beloved "Grandma" and will also be missed by her six grandkids and nine great-grandkids.

Becky's funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, February 6th at Blue Creek Baptist Church, 1251 Burgaw Hwy, Jacksonville, NC 28540. Interment will immediately follow at Onslow Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00am.
