Obituary

Rocky Mount -

Robert "Bob" Shearin, 80, passed away August 1, 2024. Jesus gently took him by the hand and led him to his heavenly home, where he is now rejoicing with loved ones gone before him.

Bob was born on March 21, 1944, in Edgecombe County, to Karl and Estelle Shearin. His father, serving in WWII, was stationed in Ireland at the time of his birth.

Bob grew up an only child but had many friends and all the love one child could get from his family. From a young age, he was taught to work hard. From the moment he was old enough, he began working as a paperboy. He spoke many times about the time he spent and the miles he went riding his "Paperboy Special" delivering papers to his community. He continued to work other jobs through his school years.

After graduating from Rocky Mount Senior High School, and always having a love for music, he became a disc jockey for WRMT. Though he enjoyed several genres, there was none he liked more than his Oldies from the 50's and 60's.  He always said, "That's when music, was music."  After a few years with the radio station, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from 1966-1970.  He was stationed on the USS America CVA-66, during the Vietnam War, as a radioman with the Communications Division.

Once he completed his service in the Navy, Bob made his home in Rocky Mount and began to do what he did best, work hard.  He was employed by and helped open the first K-Mart in Rocky Mount. Because of his outgoing personality and his love to talk, he came to know many people and many people came to know him.  During his 23-year tenure at K-Mart, many of his co-workers and customers called him "the camera man" as he managed the electronics and camera department. He was also an avid photographer and took pictures for several weddings and special events. Later in his career, Bob was employed by Lowe's Home Improvement and became a zone manager for the appliance department, finally deciding to retire, after 22 years of service.

Bob took great pride in his military service and in his work ethic. He had a sincere heart and love for his family and close friends. He was always smiling, and he loved to laugh and if you knew him well, you know he always had a pocket full of candy to pass around. He will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Karl B. and Estelle T. Shearin; his loving wife, Dinah F. Shearin and his beloved dog, Biscuit.  He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters, Meredith Shearin and Tammy S. Watson; stepdaughters, Christy Smith-Segal (Aharon), Shannon B. Turner (H.R.) and Tara F. Bissette (Frankie); three step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren; along with his former spouse and long-time friend, Shelby J. Greene; furry companion, Ace and many family friends and other extended relatives.
