Samuel Brown

Sam Brown, age 79, passed Saturday evening, March 16, 2026 at Rocky Mount Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Nash County, NC on April 21, 1947. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Summerlin, Jr.; sister, Mary "May" Tickle; brother, Willie "Bud" Brown, Jr.; and twin sister, Susan Pittman.

Sam was a true outdoorsman who loved being outside. Hunting, fishing, and gardening were some of his favorite ways to spend his time along with making lasting memories with those he loved. His grilled BBQ chicken was a favorite with family and friends, perfectly sauced and slow cooked with his special touch. We're still trying to figure out the secret to this delicious masterpiece.

Sam's working life was strong and steady, with a successful career with Burlington Industries that lasted forty years. His servant's heart also led him to serve as a volunteer firefighter with Salem Fire Department, Station 18 for almost thirty-five years.

He was a beloved father, brother, granddaddy, and dear friend who will be deeply missed.

Sam is survived by his loving family that includes three daughters, Kim Greene (Tim Spain) of Rocky Mount, Janet Lanier (Shaun) of Ayden, and Susan Summerlin of Rhode Island; brothers, Jimmy Brown of TN, Jerry Brown (Jane) of Tarboro, Darrel Brown of Whitakers, Charlie Brown (Susan) of Fayetteville, and Ernie Brown (Bobby) of Enfield; grandchildren, Heather Baker (Wayne Hill), Bryan Greene, Ronnie Lanier, Stephanie Lanier, Emily Lanier, Khloe Summerlin, MaKena Daniels, and Raidyn Ingram; great-grandchildren, Emma Brown, Noah Pridgen, Jayden Lanier, Josie Greene, and William Baker, Jr., sister-in-law, Mildred Brown of Enfield. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, family friends, and a special little maltese pup named Layla.

A service to celebrate and remember Sam's life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 22, 2026 at Davis-Little Funerals, 2129 Lawrence Circle, Rocky Mount. The family will greet friends prior to the service, beginning at 12:30 pm.
