Toni Hughes

Toni Hinton Hughes, age 78, passed away Monday, August 24, 2026. She was born in Wilson, NC on September 17, 1947, daughter of Score Jackson Hinton Jr. and Melissa Inez Robertson Hinton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Danny Hinton.

She is survived by her devoted husband of fifty-five years, Dr. Ron Hughes; sons, Matthew Hughes of New Orleans, LA, Joel Hughes and wife, Laura of Marietta, PA and Andrew Hughes and wife, Kelly of Pittsburgh, PA; brother, Mike Hinton and wife, Sharon of Johnston County; and grandchildren, Jackson, Emily, Tyler, Lincoln, Allison, Graham, Eden, Jamir and Mya Hughes. Toni will also be deeply missed by her Westview Baptist Church family; many special friends and a host of other extended relatives.

Her love for Jesus defined her life, beginning as a nurse in the intensive care unit where her calm presence and disarming smile first caught Ron's eye. That heart for service extended from working while Ron went to school to the ministry of raising and nurturing the development of her 3 sons and serving on mission trips in Cuba. Her active curiosity led her to read constantly and relearn the piano in her later years. Her radiant, infectious smile was her signature, comforting those around her and creating natural opportunities to mentor younger women. For over thirty years, she dedicated herself to teaching preschool at her church. Outside of church, her love for her yard and bright sunflowers reflected the warmth she shared with everyone around her.

A service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at Westview Baptist Church, 3408 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Interment will follow at Whitakers Cemetery, Whitakers, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:30PM.
