Surrounded by the love of his devoted family, Ferdie "Wayne" Clay passed away peacefully at his home in Tarboro, North Carolina on Sunday morning, October 11th, 2026, at the age of 77.
Born in Nash County on February 13th, 1949, he was the middle child of Ferdie and Geraldine Clay, fortunate to be sandwiched between two sisters who adored him. Growing up in Battleboro, Wayne graduated from North Edgecombe High School and later earned an associate degree in industrial engineering. A patriot at heart, he volunteered to serve his country during the Vietnam era and did so honorably in the United States Army.
Wayne grew to become a wonderful husband, dad, Papa and dear friend who made friends easily and enjoyed many passions and pastimes with family and friends. He especially enjoyed being outdoors fishing, camping, and grilling, making lasting memories that we now cherish. He loved his family and his church as much as anyone possibly could and he was grateful for the love and care shown to him. He was particularly grateful when that love showed up in the form of delicious chocolate ice cream, which no doubt, was invented just for Wayne.
A lifetime of precious memories can never be briefly summed up, but our family is left with more than just memories. We're left with wisdom gained from life lessons and experiences and a deeply rooted family legacy. Wayne's life has been a true blessing.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Cooper of Rocky Mount. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Becky Anderson Clay; son, Eric Clay of Macclesfield; daughter, Christy Clay Batts (Brian) of Hampstead; sister, Millie Clay Inscoe (Mike) of Denton; niece and nephew, Amanda Inscoe and Michael Inscoe; along with many family friends and other extended relatives. He was an especially proud Papa to his grandchildren, Hannah Clay, Sarah Grace Clay, Parker Batts, and Cade Batts, who will also greatly miss him.
A special note of thanks is extended to the Gentiva Hospice staff for their amazing care and attention when we needed it most.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Edgewood OFWB Church. Visitation will start at 1:00 pm in the fellowship hall, with service to follow at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary. Interment with military honors will follow at Edgecombe Memorial Park, Tarboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Edgewood OFWB Church, 680 Edgewood Church Road, Macclesfield, NC 27852.
