Rocky Mount -
William Thomas Proctor, affectionately known as “Billy”, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia at the age of 86. His journey began on January 11, 1940 in Edgecombe County, the second son born to George Proctor, Sr. and Minnie Lee Benson Proctor.
Billy was a graduate of the West Edgecombe High School class of 1958. He was also a hard-worker and pillar in the West Edgecombe community. Billy was a tireless tobacco farmer, volunteer firefighter, and a truck driver for Meadowbrook Meat Company (MBM) for forty years. He was a loving dad, Papa, uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle and friend and his love and light will be dearly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George “Bubba” Proctor, Jr., and sister, Irene Proctor Batts.
He loved to laugh, tease, and keep everyone on their toes. We loved him deeply, but let’s be honest, he’s absolutely going to haunt us. Not in a spooky way, just in a “the thermostat mysteriously changed to a temperature no one agreed on” way. The lucky souls he adored, and will now minorly inconvenience from time to time, are his daughter, Barbara Proctor and wife, Bri of Durham; son, Preston Proctor and wife, Ashley of Rocky Mount; granddaughter and light of his life, Avery Proctor; bonus grandson, Nakoma Smith; sisters, Virginia Proctor Turner and husband, Gene and Ellen Proctor Calhoun and husband, Kelly.
Billy will also be missed by several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and other extended relatives.
A Memorial Remembrance will be held at 3:30 pm, Saturday, May 16, 2026 at Davis-Little Funerals, 2129 Lawrence Circle, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. The family will receive friends prior, beginning at 2:00 pm and other times at the home of Billy Proctor and Preston Proctor. To honor Billy's "come as you are" view on life, the family respectfully requests that casual attire be worn to his memorial service.
The family would like to extend their many thanks and gratitude to the staff at Rich Square Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care and concern of Billy during his stay.
Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to West Edgecombe Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 2793, Rocky Mount, NC 27802.
