Willie Mae Saunders Joyner, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, passed away on April 27, surrounded by her two children.
Born in Rocky Mount, Willie was a lifelong member of the community she cherished. She built a life centered on family, creativity, and caring for others. As a dedicated hairdresser, she not only styled hair but also formed lasting friendships with those who sat in her chair.
Willie had a remarkable creative spirit. She found joy in sewing, designing draperies, crafting Halloween costumes, and making jewelry. She also loved to cook and was always searching for a new recipe to try, often sharing her creations with those she loved. Her hands were rarely still, and she had a gift for making both things—and people—feel special. She will be especially remembered for her contagious smile, one that could light up a room and bring comfort to those around her.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Amber Dyer and husband, Terry Dyer of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; her grandsons, Corbin and Evan Dyer of Columbus, Ohio; and her son, Neal Joyner and wife Renead Joyner of Rocky Mount, along with their children, Danica, Jayce, and Ashley Raya (Abel). She was also blessed with a great-grandchild, Dalia.
She is also survived by her siblings: Barbara Barbour of Selma, North Carolina; Linda Honeycutt and husband, Fred of Garner, North Carolina; and William Saunders and wife, Jamie of Rocky Mount. She was preceded in death by her sister, Terrie Nelson, and brother-in-law, J.E. Barbour.
She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, cousins she grew up with who were like brothers and sisters, and many former customers and extended family.
Willie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and trusted hairstylist to many. She was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family would like to recognize Angela Davis, who was far more than a caregiver—she was a cherished friend whose presence, compassion, and friendship brought comfort and joy to Willie in her later years.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 8th at 2:00 PM at NorthSide Church, 1660 Beaver Pond Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
