Rocky Mount –
Bessie “Lou” Griffin, age 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at her home. Her journey began in Edgecombe County on June 10, 1937, daughter of Albert Washington Webb and Prudie Robbins Webb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a stillborn son, Clyde Griffin; father and mother-in-law, Clyde Milton Griffin and Sally Forbes Griffin; sister, Lynn Whitley; aunt, Barlow Dunn and daughter-in-law, Sharon Griffin.
She leaves a lifetime of treasured memories for her husband of sixty-seven years, Milton “Mickey” Griffin; children, Glen Griffin of Rocky Mount, Barbara Ann Peaden and husband, Bruce of Tarboro and Mike Griffin and wife, Stephanie of Rocky Mount; sisters, Diane Scott and Brenda Jefferson; along with several nieces, nephews and other extended relatives.
Lou especially adored her grandchildren, Cameron Griffin (Beth), Kenneth Wooten (April), Heath Wooten (Nikki), Don Wooten (Sandra), Rebecca Modlin (Geo), Victoria Griffin, Michael Shane Griffin (Nova) and her nine great-grandchildren.
Lou was born and raised in Edgecombe County and was a graduate of South Edgecombe High School class of 1955. Shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Mickey on November 6, 1955. Love and nurture came easily to Lou, making her a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an excellent cook; her family would even say she was the best.
She also had a green thumb that allowed her to grow anything which was evident in her beautiful flower gardens. Lou also loved traveling with her family to Myrtle Beach, the mountains or simply going camping and fishing. At the end of the day, she could often be found curled up, reading her favorite books or watching the hummingbirds. Lou will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A service to celebrate Lou’s wonderful life will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00am at West Edgecombe Baptist Church, 13821 NC Highway 43 N, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery, Pinetops, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00am and other times at the home.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the care given by Nash UNC Hospice and Home Care.
