Obituary

Rocky Mount -

Betty H. Brake passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon August 13, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Carl V. Brake and twin grandchildren, Jesse and Leah Brake.

Betty was born in Clarkton, NC to Robert Lee Huckabee, Sr., and Lurla Bell Helms Huckabee on January 16, 1930. She was the first of five children. She fondly remembers her years in Clarkton, but called Wilmington, NC her “favorite place in the world” after the family moved there during WWII.

Betty worked as a bookkeeper for the family farm and as a real estate agent, but the job she took most seriously was the keeper of the homeplace. She welcomed all the Brakes back to the homeplace where it was the touchback to family.

Betty was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount. She enjoyed working with the benevolence committee at the church. She very much enjoyed the fellowship of Baptist Women’s group, she taught Sunday School, and sponsored many youth events at the farm.

She leaves a lifetime of treasured memories for her children and their spouses, Donald J. Brake (Cindy) of Macclesfield, Vickie B. Pollard (Michael) of Red Oak, James W. “Jamie” Brake (Kristina) of Lucama, Steven C. Brake (Nancy) of Pinetops and great-nephew Mark McGrath of Rockville, VA. Her heart was complete with her twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth Brake, Patrick Brake (Robin), Bailey Brake, Joshua Pollard (Erica), Nicholas Pollard (Lindy), Bennett Pollard (Casey), Allyson Farmer (Ben), Sam Brake (Madison), Emily Parker (Garrett), Abbey Brake, Madison Brake, and Anna Brake and six great-grandchildren, Taelyr, Deacon, Penny, and Adelaide Pollard, Reece Brake, and Henry Farmer.

She will also be greatly missed by her brother, Robert L. Huckabee, Jr.; her sister, Patsy Carlson; numerous family, friends, neighbors, and other extended relatives.

The family wishes to express our gratitude to the care given by The Bridges of Hendricks Creek in Tarboro and Gentiva Hospice.

A service to celebrate and remember her life will be held at 12:30pm, Friday, August 18, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 200 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Burial will follow at the Brake Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to First Baptist Church, Benevolence Committee.
