Dorothy Fisher Obituary

Rocky Mount

Dorothy Callahan Fisher, 96, of Red Oak, North Carolina, passed away at her home on April 18, 2025. She was born on April 2, 1929, in Opie, VA, just outside of South Hill. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Eddie Lee Callahan, Sr. and Mattie Sue Farrar Callahan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, R. Sullivan Fisher; her brothers, Eddie Lee “Pete” Callahan, Jr. and Hugh Thomas “Tommy” Callahan; and her sisters, Katherine Callahan Vajda, Rose Elizabeth Callahan, and Mildred Frances Callahan Summers.

Dorothy graduated from Women’s College, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in 1950, and began a career of teaching Home Economics in Nash County. There she met R. Sullivan Fisher, a Nash County farmer, at the Rocky Mount Fair and married on June 22, 1952. They settled in Red Oak, NC, and had three daughters. Dorothy supported her daughters in their 4-H endeavors by becoming a 4-H Leader and was inducted into the NC 4-H Hall of Fame. She coordinated and assisted with many horse shows, trail rides, livestock shows, and educational outings.

She and her husband were active members of Beulah Church of Christ for many years where she served as Sunday school teacher and was an officer in the Ladies’ Aide. She also enjoyed attending Stoney Creek Cowboy Church on Monday nights. Dorothy prepared many outstanding meals and desserts while actively serving the church and the 4-H community. She taught at Nashville High School, Red Oak High School, and Northern Nash Senior High, then retired from Nash County Schools. She was selected for induction into Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s society to honor outstanding women educators.

Dorothy was a Charter Member of the Red Oak Area Historical Preservation Society. She served on the Nash County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee where she organized buttermaking demonstrations and supplied agricultural books to schools. She also served on the Nash County Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee.

Dorothy was devoted to her family and community and will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank Dorothy’s church community; dedicated caregivers, Rose Coley, Becky Height, Althea Flowers, and Sue Shearin; and UNC Nash Hospice for being so supportive and caring.

Dorothy is survived by her sister, Annie Laura Callahan Rice; her daughters, Linda Eileen Fisher, Nancy Sue Fisher Marshall-Booze (Andy), and Betty Anne Fisher; grandchildren, Megan Farrar Marshall-Wicker (Adam) and James Madison "J.Matt" Marshall; her great granddaughter, Emma Farrar Marshall Wicker; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
