Dorothy Odom Obituary

Boynton Beach, Florida -

Dorothy Rackley Odom, lovingly known as "Ommie", a name bestowed upon her by her grandsons, passed away on December 14, 2023 at age 97. She was born on August 25,1926 to Joseph Glendon and Martha Rivenbark Rackley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. Odom; four sisters, five brothers and her beloved great grandson, Alex Nelms.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Jean O. Morgan of Rocky Mount, Nell O Mclamb (Mickey) of Winterville, Deborah O Nelms (Joe) of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Brian TG Morgan (Hebe) of Pembroke Pines, FL, Joey Nelms (Jen) of Cincinnati, Ohio, David (Vic) of Nottingham, MD; great grandsons, Bernhard Morgan (Fiorella) of Fort Myers, FL and his mother, Alibe Law of West Palm, FL and Miles Nelms of Cincinnati, Ohio. She also leaves loving memories for her brother, Robert (Carol) of Stoneville, NC; sister, Elva Rackley of Rocky Mount; special friend, Loleatta Manning as she was always there for Ommie; numerous nieces and nephews.

A woman of great faith, she was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Lantana. She was very active in her church; working in the clothes closet and food pantry to help those in need. She enjoyed doing this until her early nineties. Ommie always went above and beyond for the church community. She never gave a second thought to anyone who needed her. She was not a materialistic person and rather give than to receive. She always found joy and fulfillment in the quality time she spent with family and friends.

Some of her favorite activities included word search and watching her favorite TV programs including Nascar and football with her grandson. When visiting her, you could always find her working on her embroidery, creating gifts that many of us treasure or deep in a book as she was an avid reader. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh and it was infectious to anyone around her. Ommie greeted everyone with a smile and never met a stranger she could always carry on a conversation with anyone she met. She leaves a legacy of love for all of her family, she was loved dearly and will be missed but will always be in our hearts.
