Gerald "Wayne" Harper

Spring Hope –

Gerald “Wayne” Harper, age 81, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Nash UNC Health Care in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. His journey began in Edgecombe County on February 5, 1944, son of Gidd and Valeria Edwards Harper, both of whom preceded him in death.

He leaves a lifetime of memories for his devoted wife of fifty-eight years, Joy Lamm Harper; son, David Wayne Harper of Spring Hope; daughter, Wanda Harper Sohn (Mike) of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Brad Dickens (Katie), Elizabeth Harrell (Austin), Jessica Logan (Joshua) and Caitlyn Sohn; great-granddaughter, Lorelai Dickens; brother, Bobby Harper of Youngsville; sister, Eddye Meyers of Rocky Mount; and mother-in-law, Josephine Lamm. He will also be missed by several nieces, nephews and other extended relatives.

Wayne was known for his remarkable character, which not only helped him achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout Award but also paved the way for his honorable service in the United States Navy aboard the USS Morton Sound. He later enjoyed a successful career with Carolina Telephone Company, retiring following thirty-two dedicated years. He was also a member of Ephesus Baptist Church in Spring Hope where his servant’s heart guided him to help in many capacities when he was able.

In his free time, Wayne enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family. He was known to have a soft spot for the neighborhood animals, often caring and feeding any strays that showed up on his doorstep.

Wayne lived a wonderful life and will be dearly missed by his family, friends, church family and those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Battleboro Cemetery, Cemetery Drive, Battleboro, NC 27809. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
