Irene Elaine Worrell Moss, 87, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020. She was born on June 24, 1933 to Wade Lee Worrell and Lillian Ann Pearl Vick Worrell. Known as “Doodle” to her family, she was the glue that held them together, and she spent countless hours caring for many of them through extended illnesses. She was employed by Schotland Mills, Burlington Industries, and Walker Ross Printing Company, and after her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at UNC Nash Hospital. She was an active member of the Faithful Servants Sunday School Class at Sunset Avenue Baptist Church and of the Oak Level Ruritan Club. Her greatest joy was being “mom” to her precious cat, Smokey.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by husbands, Walter Lemuel Tyson and Willard Eugene (Gene) Moss; brother, Rufus Wade Worrell (Eula); sister, Clara Worrell Johnson (Samuel), and niece, Sheila Gail Shearin.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a niece and nephew who were also her long-time care givers, Dawana Worrell Davis (Phil) and Samuel Jerome Johnson (Nancy); brother, Lonnie Wade Worrell (Cleo); sister, Doris Worrell Shearin (David); nieces, Yvonne Worrell Lucas and Paula Shearin Macurer, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Her family wishes to thank her extended family, friends, and church family for the words of encouragement shared with her over the years and most especially over the past few months. A special word of thanks goes to her special friend and Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Mattieleene Johnson, for the many years of friendship they enjoyed. And while her delicious chocolate pies will be sorely missed, her presence with us at family gatherings, especially during holiday celebrations, will leave a void that can never again be filled.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Sunset Avenue Baptist Church, 3732 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 7 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 6 pm. A graveside committal will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at 11 am at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Oak Level Ruritan Club, c/o Roselle Tyson, 1040 E. Washington Street, Nashville, NC 27856 or to a pet adoption agency of your choice.
In keeping with efforts to protect friends and family during the COVID-19 pandemic, face coverings are respectfully required for all guests.
