Nashville, NC –
Walter Marvin Winstead, Jr. (Marvin), 74, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 18, 2024. He was born in Nash County December 18,1950 to Walter Marvin Winstead, Sr. and Jean Deans Winstead. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law Cathy Stroud Winstead.
He is survived by his brother Gregory Dean Winstead of Nashville.
Marvin graduated from Southern Nash High and went on to receive degrees from both Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and East Carolina University.
Marvin’s career path took him into education where he was employed as a guidance counselor and recruiter at Wilson Technical Community College and later as a guidance counselor at Southern Nash High School. After years in education, he started a specialty hay and feed delivery business, serving many area horse owners.
Being raised on a farm, Marvin developed a passion for nature and land conservancy. This passion led him to become an active and vocal member of the Sierra Club where he worked tirelessly on efforts to help preserve the environment for future generations. He also enjoyed kayaking and brought many young people into the sport as an instructor.
He will be missed by his family, friends, and the many students he helped throughout his years as a counselor.
Marvin was a private person; the family asks that you take a moment to pause and remember him and his contributions to education and land conservancy, and for passing on a love of nature to those he leaves behind.
