Rocky Mount -
Mel R. Strickland was reunited with his Savior on August 25, 2024. He was born in Nash county on August 23, 1944 to Randolph S. and Margaret B. Strickland. He worked for Carolina Telephone (later Sprint), and found his passion in woodworking. Whether helping family and friends purchase cars, or in ministry, working with local congregations’ sound systems, Mel was happiest serving his community.
Mel was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Sylvia B. Strickland. He is survived by his daughters, Robin Willams of Red Oak and Amy Bennett of Raleigh along with their husbands, Todd Williams and Sean Bennett and grandchildren, Anne Claire Houck and husband, Jon of Bangor, ME, Whitaker Bennett of Raleigh, and Cooper Williams of Red Oak.
The family is very appreciative of the compassionate nature of Nash Hospice, Brekenridge Retirement Center, and his caregivers. In addition, the family is grateful for the many years of support from Dr. Adeyemi Lawal, Dr. Paul Bondy, and Rev. Keith Griffin, as well as Mel’s neighbors, Thomas, Phyllis, Linda, John, Kyle, and Steve who were all extremely helpful during his illness.
There will be a graveside service at Pineview Cemetery officiated by Rev. Keith Griffin on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at 3:30pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
