Castalia –
Shirley H. “Granny Jack” Bunn, age 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday afternoon, April 13, 2023 at Brekenridge Retirement Center in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She was born on February 4, 1937 in Nash County to John Taylor Harper and Martha Elizabeth "Scrap" Harper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Roger T. Harper.
She leaves a lifetime of treasured memories for her daughter, Ellen Bunn Thomas and husband, Kenneth of Castalia; grandson, Caleb Thomas and wife, Jordan of Nashville; granddaughter, Terri Thomas of Raleigh; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Thomas; along with her Castalia Baptist Church family.
Lovingly known as "Granny Jack", Shirley was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a devoted Christian who was a member of Castalia Baptist Church for many years, serving in various capacities. Her servant's heart was further amplified when she volunteered for a therapeutic riding program called Helping Horses. She had a love for God’s creations, especially the outdoors and animals including horses, dogs and cats. She enjoyed camping, traveling and the farm that she was born and raised on. Shirley was a fiercely independent and hard-working woman who was filled with endless energy and a sense of adventure. She will be truly missed by her family, friends, church family and the many people whose lives she touched.
A service to celebrate Granny Jack's life will be held Sunday, April 16, 2023 at 3:00PM at Castalia Baptist Church, 9563 Main Street, Castalia, NC 27816. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00PM and other times at the home of Ellen and Kenneth Thomas.
