Greenville –

Winston Haywood Matthews, age 84, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at ECU Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. His journey began in Nash County on November 25, 1941, son of Jesse and Iva Winstead Matthews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Reannon Danielle Matthews and siblings, Lois Jean Farmer, Roger Matthews, James Matthews, Guilford Matthews and Margaret Mayo.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Jean Proctor Matthews; daughters, Teresa Lynn Matthews of Rocky Mount and Frances Arlene Jackson (Ricky) of Greenville; grandchildren, Joshua Lee Parsons, Amanda Edge, Amy Marie Vick, Ricky Lee Jackson, Travis Ryan Jackson and Autumn Elizabeth Jackson and great-grandchildren, Johanna Renae Summers, Eden, Paul and Harper Reges, Aubrey and T.J. Jackson and Ellie Lumley.

The family will host a Memorial Celebration of Life at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at Word of Life International, 3388 McNair Road, Tarboro, NC 27886. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 pm.
